Cameroon withdraws from CAF’s 2020 champions league’s semi finals and final hosting duties.
The Cameroonian government amidst fear of the coronavirus pandemic has withdrawn from caf champions league hosting duties, in a press conference on Monday July 13 led by the President of Cameroon’s Football Federation, FECAFOOT Seidou Mbombo Njoya at the body’s headquarters in Douala, Littoral region of Cameroon.
Seidou Mbombo Njoya addressed the press saying, the Government of Cameroon did not agree to welcome the semi-finals and final of the 2020 African Champion’s League due to health risks linked to the Coronavirus pandemic and uncertainty on the evolution of the pandemic in the country.
He stated that the Confederation of African Football, CAF was made aware on Friday July 10 that the rapid infections and killing of citizens by covid-19 makes it impossible for the competition to be staged in Cameroon.
Confederation of African football announced last month that Cameroon will host the champions league games while Morocco host the CAf confederation cup games.
Caf indicated that this year’s semi final and final won’t take the usual format where both the semi final and final are played on home and away basis, this year will have just one fixture at both stages.
Al Ahly will face Wydad Casablanca with Zamalek taking on Raja Casablanca with the matches supposed to take place at the new Japoma stadium in Douala.
